Classes:  This program engages students in the practice of academic skills in the interactive classroom, in language focus modules, in independent group projects and on discovery field trips. Each week focuses on a particular theme of interest to university students; activities integrate speaking tasks with a reading and writing component. Students have on-going opportunities for contact with a variety of instructors, students and guests through local regrouping of classes, all-program activities, guest speakers and lecturers, as well as through sociocultural activities organized for the entire English Language Institute by our Cultural Assistants.

Goals of the Program:

  • Enhance skills and confidence in oral/aural English communication
  • Learn discussion strategies and functions
  • Increase fluency in the discussion of issues related to university life, study skills, global issues and cross-cultural sensitivity
  • Increase knowledge of job-hunting and resume-building

Class Topics:

  • Social and Academic Diversity
  • The Classroom & Campus Life
  • Global Issues and the Media
  • Health at Work and School
  • After Graduation

Assessment:  Assessment is based primarily on overall achievement and participation in group projects and presentation of academic topics.

Admission Requirements:  Participants must have completed high school and have at a minimum an intermediate level of English.

Levels Covered in the Program:  The program can accommodate intermediate to proficiency levels; however, class composition is based on the number of registrants. Testing for class placement is on the first day of the program.
